Learn court reporting and start a career from home as a court reporter. There are different avenues one can follow after you obtain your court reporter training. The National Court Reporters Association www.ncraonline.org has approved approximately 70 vocational and training schools.
To be approved by the National Court Reporters Association the school requires that their students have the ability to record 225 words per minute. You will probably find that your court reporter training will take about 33 months. Some states will require you to be certified after your court reporter training. Court reporter certification requires that you pass an exam. There can be different levels or types of exams, depending on skill level or perhaps particular types of court reporter systems. Additional experience, court reporter school or even a college degree might be required. Court reporter schools train you in many different areas of focus such as judicial reporting, including depositions and courtrooms transcription.
Other excellent ways to work at home in court reporting are:
- Broadcast Captioning Captioning for the hearing impaired on television. This is very lucrative since the FCC requires that by 2006 all TV programs must be captioned for the hearing impaired.
- Media Room Reporter Provide a transcript for immediate release to the media. Used for sports reporting.
- Communication Access Realtime Reporting (known as CART) Help students with disabilities, such as hearing or limited vision.
- Webcasting and Reporting Transmit information on a realtime basis for training seminars, online conference calls, etc.
The above industries are only a partial list of the areas in which you can use your court reporter training. Check the National Court Reporters Association or court reporter schools in your area for a more comprehensive list of various ways your skills can be utilized.
Depending upon how much you work or the area you choose to work in, you can expect to make anywhere from $30,500 up to approximately $80,000 salary as a court reporter. Some of the industries listed above may be more lucrative than others. Court reporter salaries will also vary depending upon your geographical location.
According to the National Court Reporters Association there will be more jobs than applicants, so not only will there be a good opportunity for employment, but a great opportunity for you to work at home in court reporting and design your own schedule.
